Build a Successful Business in Your Own Way on Your Own Terms!
Are you an “Unconventional Professional?” If So, Your Best Bet May to be Ignore Most of the Advice You Have Ever Heard…
If you are building an “unconventional business” (or plan to in the near future) you may feel confused and frustrated trying to follow other people’s advice on how you should do it. The challenge is that those experts, even though they may be well-meaning, are trying to apply their traditional ideas to your unconventional business. This can lead to a whole lot of wasted time, energy, and money and leave you no better off than you when you started.
I Am All Too Familiar With this Experience
When I started my speaking business, I had a unique approach. I combined motivational speaking with improv comedy to create a high-energy, interactive experience that helped audiences be more creative and adapt to change. For many years I read books, bought courses, spoke with colleagues, and paid experts to help me grow my business.
After more years than I would care to admit, I had made barely any progress in my business. Bookings languished, money was a struggle, and my self-esteem plummeted.
Finally I came to a realization: My business was different from other speakers. I had been trying to follow so much “traditional” advice that worked for other speakers that I was actually hindering my progress!
It was at that moment when I truly accepted that position and realized I needed to forge my own path that my business started to grow. It was when I started to ignore most of the “traditional advice” I was being given and develop my own ideas and plans that I started to achieve success.
I am happy to say that now, a few years after that point, my speaking business is thriving and still growing.
This Solution May Work For You Too…
Let me be clear: there is nothing wrong with traditional advice! In fact, traditional advice works for a large majority of professionals and businesses. However, for some businesses and solopreneurs, traditional advice not only doesn’t work, it may be holding you back.
If you have not yet sought out and applied some traditional advice, than stop and go do that first!
If you have tried it and figured out that yours is more of an “unconventional” business, then the key is to stop trying to force your unique business into other people’s models. Instead, you must develop your own business and marketing plan based on your strengths, offer, and market.
In many ways this is a more difficult approach since you cannot just use any-old off the shelf program. However, it is also the only way to do it if your business is truly different.
When you do put in the time, energy, and creativity to develop your own customized approach, you reap a few benefits. You will be able to:
- Remove confusion and uncertainty from wondering “is this right thing?” by gaining deep clarity on your goals.
- Relieve the overwhelm and doubt that comes from having no idea what steps to take or how to take them
- Abandon marketing activities that make you miserable and don’t work for you and focus on what energizes and works
- Avoid paralysis and “waiting to have it all figured out” and start acting now!
- Stop wasting time, energy, and resources doing too much while making too little progress
- Overcome the self-esteem issues that arise when you feel your results aren’t equal to your talent or what you feel you deserve.
- Relieve the fear and confusion of setting prices and putting together proposals
- Solve the frustration that “nothing seems to work for you”
- Learn how to find paying clients – and how to connect with them in a way that makes them want to hire you!
