Other Resources
My ideas around applying improv to business and life come from a combination of years and years of studying and performing improv, working in the “real world,” and reading and learning as much as I can from other great writers and thinkers. Here are some of the people/books/videos I have incorporated ideas from:
Books:
- Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman – Excellent, in depth resource on how we think and the effects our biases and heuristics have without us realizing it.
- Creativity, Inc. Ed Catmull – Great book on creativity and innovation from the head of one of the most creative companies out there: Pixar.
- The Artist’s Way, Julia Cameron – A manual on how adults can tap back into their “inner artist”
- The Now Habit, Neil Fiore – Excellent resource on overcoming procrastination. Also focuses on some inner dialog techniques that can not only improve productivity but also reduce stress.
- Flow, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi – From the researcher who developed the idea, this book explains what the “Flow State” is and how and why you can get into it.
- Drive, Daniel Pink – A book on “what motivates us,” with a variety of ideas on how you can take action and move forward.
- Rethinking Positive Thinking, Gabriele Oettingen – A different perspective on positive thinking that talks about a simple but powerful way of being more effective in changing habits and behaviors
- Impro for Storytellers, Keith Johnstone – My favorite book on improv comedy. This book is for performance, but many of my “applying improv” idea came from things I learned in this book.
